Ficep UK, a prominent steel fabrication equipment provider based in Yorkshire, continues to make significant strides in the industry with its commitment to innovation and growth. Made in Yorkshire, trade organisation championing UK manufacturing, recently sat down with Richard Clark UK Operations Director at Ficep to discuss the company's latest developments, challenges and more.

Established in 2000, Ficep UK is one of the leading suppliers of structural steel and plate fabrication equipment in the country. A recent standout development is their supply of a ‘game-changing’ vending machine system that provides tooling material directly onsite. Operators can access the tools they need using a personal code, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs by up to 30%.

Richard said: The tooling vending machine is a game-changer. All of the tooling is managed by us, we get automatic reports sent of what the operator needs and when. While we are responsible for the tooling and replenishing of stock, the tools can be provided for any steel processing machines, in use by the client.”

Managed by Ficep UK through automation technology, the vending machine initiative has grown exponentially. Richard explained how the Sales team expanded from one person in 2020 to seven in 2023, generating nearly £2 million in turnover. This success stems from Ficep's proactive approach to selling tooling for their machines, a shift from their previous practice of allowing local suppliers to provide these tools. Richard added: “Diversifying in this way has allowed us to increase our margins which traditionally have been slim for tooling and consumables.”

Despite facing challenges like supply chain management and competitive pricing, Ficep has forged strategic partnerships to secure favourable pricing on tooling materials. These efforts have positioned the company as a leader in the industry, regularly providing tools at lower costs than competitors.

Automation and digital solutions play a crucial role in Ficep's operations, enabling seamless tracking and management of tooling usage. This technology has helped clients reduce waste and manage costs effectively.

In terms of sustainability, Ficep has invested in solar panels and other green initiatives, aligning with governmental goals for reducing carbon emissions. Although not directly involved in all sustainability efforts, the company is actively exploring ways to minimise its environmental impact.

Looking at the broader UK manufacturing landscape, Ficep acknowledges the impact of political and economic factors, such as Brexit and election uncertainties, which have led to cautious spending among clients. Additionally, the industry faces a significant skills shortage, driving the demand for automated solutions.

Ficep's dedication to innovation, strategic partnerships, and sustainable practices has solidified its position as a leading force in the steel fabrication industry, poised for continued growth and success.
